This is called a "rub".

Bucks use their antlers to rub trees during the fall leading up to the rut or breeding season. They do this to mark their territory. Bucks will also rub trees late summer to get the velvet off their antlers. Do you think this was a buck getting his velvet off or a buck already in the mood for the rut?
